Being excellent demands first that you become unreasonable. And just so we're clear, excellence in my books does not in any way imply a conventional metric like getting top academic grades (unless, of course, you enjoy getting them A's).
Most people are mediocre at best. So unless they have the kind of result you'd kill to have, take their advice with a pinch of salt.
